On the morning of the 18th, Mayor Lee made a “Public Appeal to Prevent COVID-19 Infection” at the city hall briefing room, urging citizens to join forces with health authorities to overcome this difficult situation and actively cooperate.
Mayor Lee emphasized, “Among the 18 confirmed cases in Gwangju, 9 are related to the Shincheonji Daegu Church worship group infection, and 8 are either individuals who traveled overseas or close contacts. This clearly shows that refraining from group gatherings and overseas travel is very important to block the spread of community infection.”
He continued, “The city has secured a complete list of Gwangju residents and stayers among overseas entrants and is conducting one-on-one active monitoring twice daily for symptoms for two weeks after entry, strongly recommending self-quarantine. Since efforts by quarantine authorities alone have limitations, please refrain from overseas travel, and those who have returned from abroad should avoid going out for two weeks and minimize contact with family members to strictly manage themselves.”
He also asked citizens to practice social distancing and refrain from attending events where many people gather in enclosed spaces.
Mayor Lee stated, “Religious facilities, PC rooms, karaoke rooms, call centers, academies, indoor game centers, and sports facilities are realistically major sources of infection. Until COVID-19 subsides, we ask for the cancellation of meetings and events and the suspension of facility operations. We also urge citizens to avoid using crowded public places and to strictly follow preventive measures such as always wearing masks.”

He added, “Only when the city, health authorities, and citizens unite as one to build a watertight and solid quarantine network can we prevent the spread of infection in the community. Each citizen, as a key player in quarantine, should refrain from overseas travel and strictly observe social distancing and preventive measures to prevent group infections,” he repeatedly appealed.
