Jangseong-gun, Early Prevention of Fruit Fire Blight Inflow through Joint Control Measures
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Oh Gil-su] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 18th that it will designate a joint control period for fire blight and conduct intensive control measures to completely block the inflow of fire blight disease.
'Fire blight' is a highly contagious quarantine bacterial disease that occurs in apple and pear orchards. When infected, the leaves, flowers, and branches of the plant wither and die, turning black as if burned. Once an outbreak occurs, all host plants within a 100m radius of the orchard must be buried, causing significant damage to farmers.
Until the 13th, the county supplied fire blight preventive agents free of charge to about 280 fruit farmers covering 281 hectares, and will designate and operate a joint control period for ten days from the 20th to the 29th.
During this period, farmers are required to perform self-control, and after spraying the agents, they must keep the control confirmation certificate, work log, and empty bags of the sprayed agents for one year. This is essential for claiming compensation in case of fire blight outbreaks.
To enhance the preventive effect against fire blight, it is important to spray the agents at the right time. For pears, the optimal time is just before flower bud sprouting, and for apples, before new shoot sprouting. Especially this year, due to the warm winter weather, flower bud and new shoot sprouting are expected to be 4 to 7 days earlier than last year.
