Chinese Researchers: Blood Type O More Resistant to COVID-19, Type A More Vulnerable
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Park Sun-mi] A Chinese study has found that blood type O may have relatively strong resistance to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), while blood type A may be more vulnerable.
On the 17th, the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a medical research team from eight institutions, including Southern University of Science and Technology and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, conducted a study on more than 2,000 COVID-19 patients and found that infection is related to blood type.
The researchers revealed that among 1,775 COVID-19 patients hospitalized at Wuhan Jin Yintan Hospital, 37.75% were blood type A, 26.42% type B, 10.03% type AB, and 25.80% type O, noting that patients with blood type A showed a higher infection rate and tended to exhibit more severe symptoms.
In Wuhan, with a population of 11 million, the population distribution by blood type is 32.16% type A, 24.90% type B, 9.10% type AB, and 33.84% type O. The researchers also reported that among 206 COVID-19 deaths in Wuhan, 85 were blood type A, which is 63% more than blood type O (52 cases).

The researchers emphasized the need for further related studies but advised that blood type differences should be considered when treating COVID-19 patients. They recommended that blood type A, which is relatively vulnerable to COVID-19, should be subject to more thorough monitoring and aggressive treatment.
