The donation was raised by Chinese international students hoping it would be used to help Seongbuk-gu residents who are going through difficult times due to COVID-19, and it was delivered to the Seongbuk-gu Office on the 13th.
The Graduate School of Sports Industry at Kookmin University has long maintained active exchanges with Chinese universities through various programs. Many students who graduated from prestigious Chinese sports universities such as Beijing Sport University, Shenyang Sport University, and Xi'an Sport University have enrolled here, and currently, students from over 20 regions including Beijing and Shanghai study together with Korean students.
A total of 47 people participated in this fundraising campaign, including Chinese current students, students on leave, alumni, and one professor from the Graduate School of Sports Industry. Most of them are currently self-isolating in their dormitories, and some are still in China, but the fundraising was quickly carried out through WeChat and other means.
They actively participated, expressing the view that "helping Korea is our duty and responsibility. We want to be of some help to those suffering from COVID-19."
The first Chinese international student alumnus to send the donation, Kwon Cho-young (full-time lecturer at Hebei Normal University of Science and Technology), said, "Seeing Korea going through a difficult time recently was very painful. I am sending this small token of support with the hope that Korea and China will overcome the COVID-19 crisis quickly through mutual aid (同舟共濟)."
An alumnus from Wuhan also joined the fundraising campaign. Most of this alumnus’s family lives in Wuhan, and their mother and uncle, who are doctors, are working at COVID-designated hospitals on the front lines. They said, "During this difficult time, the Korean government and social organizations have actively provided a lot of help. I will always cherish my grateful heart. I hope Korea recovers quickly as well."
Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, "I am grateful to the Chinese international students who voluntarily participated with warm hearts. I feel that we have received hope that we must come together and overcome these difficult times. The donated funds will be used valuably to help those struggling due to COVID-19."
