View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Seolgina Cho] SK Telecom is taking the lead in establishing global technical standards for interworking mobile edge computing (MEC), a core technology of 5G networks.
On the 16th, SK Telecom announced that the technology related to the 5G MEC interworking platform it proposed was adopted as an international standardization task at the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) meeting, held via video conference due to the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
The technology adopted as an international standardization task will become a global standard after discussions among dozens of countries within ITU-T. MEC is a core 5G technology that creates a shortcut for wireless data transmission, enhancing the performance of ultra-low latency services such as cloud gaming, smart factories, autonomous driving, and vehicle control.
The 'Federated Multi-access Edge Computing' standard proposed by SK Telecom features the establishment of a separate channel that enables interworking between 5G MEC systems that exist separately within each telecom operator, allowing service providers to offer the same 5G MEC services regardless of region or telecom operator.
SK Telecom plans to conduct research on the structure, signaling specifications, and requirements of the related technology within the ITU-T study group, aiming to complete the international standard by 2022.

Jongmin Lee, Head of SK Telecom's Tech Innovation Group, who is leading this research, said, "The adoption of this standard will be the cornerstone for building an environment where customers can receive 5G MEC-based ultra-low latency services anywhere in the world." SK Telecom intends to continue global collaboration not only in standard research but also in demonstration research to expand the 5G MEC ecosystem.
