Gwangju City Confirms 30 Projects for 21st General Election Pledges
Industrial Economy, Women and Children, Welfare and Human Rights, etc... Totaling 7.718 Trillion Won
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 12th that it has finalized 30 projects to propose as pledges for the 21st general election ahead of the April 15 general election.
Gwangju City, together with the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute, established the ‘2020 Gwangju Future Leap Strategic Tasks’ over about four months starting from November last year, and discovered 108 detailed projects.
The election pledge proposal projects finalized this time were selected after discussions were held by each department and the research institute to select regional pending projects and mid- to long-term development projects.
The scale of the proposed projects amounts to 7.718 trillion won, covering all areas of city administration including industrial economy, women and children, welfare and human rights, culture and sports, environmental safety, urban transportation, environmental safety, and autonomous innovation.
These projects are core projects for Gwangju’s future leap, focusing on projects that urgently need support. The projects by sector are as follows.
First, in the industrial economy sector, six projects were selected for ‘realizing an AI-centered industrial innovation and labor-management win-win economic city’: ▲ Establishment of data-centered open infrastructure ▲ Building an AI-centered business ecosystem ▲ Establishment of an AI-based disaster prediction optical technology commercialization platform ▲ Construction of the Gwangju Dementia Cohort Big Data Center ▲ Creation of a social economy innovation town ▲ Establishment of a future advanced agriculture demonstration complex.
In the women and children sector, aiming to ‘make Gwangju a good city to give birth and raise children,’ projects such as ▲ Installation and operation of a Together Care Center ▲ Construction of a family care base family center were selected.
In the welfare and human rights sector, aiming to ‘improve citizens’ welfare realization and human rights enhancement to improve quality of life,’ five projects were included: ▲ Construction of a facility for disabled training ▲ Construction of public silver housing ▲ Establishment of a pet welfare support center ▲ Establishment of the 5·18 Street Museum system ▲ Construction of a National Trauma Healing Center.
In the culture and sports sector, for ‘realizing a dignified first-class cultural city Gwangju,’ seven projects were selected: ▲ Attraction of the National Gwangju Gugak Center ▲ Construction of the Gwangju Biennale exhibition hall ▲ Attraction of the National Asia Contemporary Art Museum ▲ Creation of the Namdo New Hallyu complex cultural theme park ▲ Establishment of the Korea Culture Technology (CT) Research Institute as a national institution ▲ Branding of Gwangju representative food ▲ Amendment of the Special Act on the Creation of an Asia Culture Centered City.
In the environmental safety sector, for ‘creating a safe and eco-friendly ecological city for citizens,’ three projects were selected: ▲ Creation of a water circulation leading city ▲ Establishment of the UNESCO Global Geopark East Asia platform ▲ Pilot construction of a smart safety watch platform.
In the urban transportation sector, aiming for ‘realization of a transportation hub city in the southwest region and Gwangju-style urban regeneration,’ six projects were selected: ▲ Development of the Gwangju Songjeong Station KTX investment leading district ▲ Expansion of the Gwangju Songjeong Station building as the southwest region hub ▲ Construction of the Dalbit inland railway (Gwangju?Daegu) ▲ Opening of the Gwangju Hanam?Jangseong Samgye metropolitan road ▲ Gwangju Station economic base-type urban regeneration New Deal project ▲ Prompt selection of a preliminary relocation candidate site for Gwangju military airport (including legal amendments).
In the autonomous innovation sector, the proposal was made to build a foundation for future leap through additional relocation of public institutions.
Gwangju City plans to disclose the 30 projects on the Gwangju City website and deliver them to each political party to propose them as election pledges.
It also plans to continue activities to ensure that regional pending projects are reflected in national plans in the future.

Oh Young-geol, the city’s policy planning officer, said, “We selected the 21st general election pledge proposal projects focusing on projects that practically need help,” adding, “Since the selection of pledges and realization of projects can provide an opportunity for Gwangju’s leap, we expect active adoption of pledges by each political party.”
