Seongdong-gu Supports Installation Costs for 'Child Exit Confirmation Devices' at Taekwondo and Other Sports Academies
Preventing Safety Accidents from Child Neglect, Reducing Economic Burden on Small Sports Academies... Support up to 200,000 Won
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) will support the installation of ‘Child Exit Confirmation Devices’ on school transport vehicles of sports academies such as Taekwondo and Hapkido dojangs from the 11th to the 27th.
The target is a total of 65 sports academies registered with the district, and up to 200,000 KRW will be provided for one school transport vehicle per sports facility. Vehicles that have already installed the device at their own expense can also apply by submitting proof of expenditure.
The ‘Child Exit Confirmation Device’ is a safety device that, according to the regulations on the performance and standards of automobiles and automobile parts, sounds an alarm and activates an emergency flashing indicator if the driver does not check inside the school transport vehicle and press the confirmation bell located in the last row within 3 minutes after turning off the engine.
Although the installation of exit confirmation devices on children’s school transport vehicles was mandated by the amendment and enforcement of the Road Traffic Act in April last year, sports facility academies, despite being children’s school transport vehicles, were not included under the Academy Act, leaving no proper way to receive support.
Some small-scale academies agreed with the strengthening of safety devices due to the legal amendment but raised voices requesting support for sports academies as well, stating that they had to bear the costs entirely without any support measures.
Through this support project, it is expected to prevent safety accidents that may occur if children fail to exit the vehicle and to reduce the economic burden on sports academies.
Jung Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “Children’s safety is the highest priority that cannot be exchanged for anything,” and added, “The district will actively support the installation of safety devices on school transport vehicles so that economic burdens do not cause hesitation, and will make every effort to ensure children’s safety.”

Seongdong-gu proactively introduced the ‘Sleeping Child Check System’ in July 2018, which confirms the safe exit of all children by tagging the NFC installed on the last seat inside the school transport vehicle and on the exterior of the vehicle with a smartphone upon arrival at all daycare centers and kindergartens, notifying parents, daycare centers (kindergartens), and the district control center, receiving great response from residents.
