Gyeonggi-do Sends Nation's First Search Notice to 'Individual Businesses'...
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has achieved significant results by being the first metropolitan local government to send search notices to delinquent taxpayers with personal businesses.
Gyeonggi Province announced on the 11th that before the full-scale collection of delinquent taxes, it sent search notices to 19,609 delinquent taxpayers with personal businesses in February, resulting in 3,959 people voluntarily paying 2.538 billion KRW in delinquent taxes. It also added that it confirmed the assets of 176 delinquent taxpayers who had been written off due to reasons such as having no assets, and collected 135 million KRW of previously abandoned tax claims.
Mr. A, who had actually been delinquent on local income tax and others amounting to 64 million KRW for four years, fully paid after receiving the business search notice.
Also, delinquent taxpayer Mr. B, who had been written off for 11 million KRW in local income tax and others, was operating a business with income and waiting for the statute of limitations to expire. However, through this personal business investigation, assets were confirmed, and he agreed to pay the delinquent amount in monthly installments. The statute of limitations expires five years after the write-off without separate asset seizure.
The province plans to continue thoroughly identifying tax evaders by verifying accounts receivable for delinquent taxpayers operating personal businesses and implementing strong delinquent tax measures.
Additionally, for delinquent taxpayers facing financial difficulties, the province will provide opportunities for recovery by utilizing the delinquent tax collection deferral system and the write-off system.

Lee Eui-hwan, head of the Tax Justice Division of the province, said, "This investigation of delinquent taxpayers’ personal businesses was expanded across Gyeonggi Province because many high-amount delinquent taxpayers in the metropolitan delinquent tax team’s survey delayed payment despite having business income." He emphasized, "We will continue to find the most effective collection methods allowed under the Local Tax Collection Act for delinquent taxpayers who persistently evade tax payments despite repeated payment encouragement, thereby realizing fair tax justice."
