Im Jong-gi, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly Member, Requests to Find the 'Stolen' National Assembly Member
Request to Join National Petition Against Presidential Veto on Public Official Election Act Amendment
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Im Jong-gi, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly, announced on the 10th at the 338th extraordinary session that he requested active participation in the national petition urging the president to exercise the veto power on the revision of the Public Official Election Act related to the redistricting of National Assembly constituencies.
Assemblyman Im stated, "The upper population limit for the National Assembly constituency redistricting standard is twice the lower limit," and added, "In the case of Suncheon City, with a population of 281,150, it should be divided into two separate constituencies, Gap and Eul, and the Central Election Commission also divided it into two constituencies."
He argued, "However, in this National Assembly constituency redistricting, at the request of the National Assembly, Suncheon City, Gwangyang City, Gurye County, and Gokseong County were combined and readjusted into two constituencies, Gap and Eul, but this is an unprecedented and clear unconstitutional act to manipulate the two constituencies of Suncheon City into one constituency."
He continued, "If the population does not reach the lower limit, basic local governments must be combined, but there is no method to combine basic local governments and then divide them again," and expressed indignation, saying, "Is it possible to commit such an outrageous unconstitutional redistricting by merging Suncheon with neighboring local governments after changing the population deviation from three times to the current two times, which was done to comply with the principle of equality of voting value?"
Accordingly, he strongly appealed, "To find the stolen National Assembly member, a national petition was submitted to the Blue House to allow the president to exercise veto power on the unconstitutional revision of the Public Official Election Act, and I urge the residents to participate in correcting the unreasonable redistricting."
