Wemade Receives 4.3 Billion KRW Compensation for Copyright Infringement of 'Mir 2' from China's Kingnet
Rejection of Kingnet's Additional Enforcement Application in Zhejiang Subrogation Arbitration
"Will Strongly Pursue According to Chinese Law and International Law Procedures"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] Wemade announced on the 9th that it has received 4.3 billion KRW in damages following a favorable court ruling against the Chinese game developer Shanghai Kaiying Network Technology (hereinafter Kingnet).
This ruling, issued on December 27 last year by the Shanghai Putuo District People's Court, recognized that Kingnet's game "Wangzhu Jeon-gi" infringed on Wemade's copyright for "Mir's Legend 2." At the time, the court ordered, "The acts infringing on the copyright of Mir's Legend 2 must cease immediately, and the development and operation of the Wangzhu Jeon-gi mobile game must not include content that infringes on the copyright of Mir's Legend 2," and decided that Kingnet must jointly compensate for economic losses of 25 million yuan and reasonable costs of 250,000 yuan.
Wemade will not stop at receiving this compensation but plans to proceed with additional claims for damages related to the suspension of Wangzhu Jeon-gi's service and the actual profits earned by Kingnet.
Meanwhile, the request to add Kingnet to the enforcement of damages against Kingnet affiliate Zhejiang Huanyu was dismissed on the 6th by the Beijing No. 4 Intermediate People's Court. The International Chamber of Commerce's International Arbitration Court (ICA) in Singapore ruled in May last year that Zhejiang Huanyu, which failed to fulfill the "Mir's Legend" license agreement, must pay Wemade approximately 80.7 billion KRW in damages. Wemade argued that enforcement should also be extended to Kingnet, which holds 100% of Zhejiang Huanyu's shares and is effectively the same economic entity. Wemade plans to file an objection lawsuit against this dismissal with the Beijing No. 4 Intermediate People's Court.

Jang Hyun-guk, CEO of Wemade, said, "The dismissal of the application to collect the arbitration damages from Kingnet regarding Zhejiang Huanyu is a perplexing and unacceptable decision," adding, "We will vigorously pursue the rightful compensation through procedures prescribed by Chinese and international law until we receive the full amount." He further stated, "The damages received this time from Wangzhu Jeon-gi are the first significant compensation, and other lawsuit outcomes will follow."
