[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The Seoul Metropolitan Council held the 1st meeting of the Special Committee on Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Support during the recess of the 291st extraordinary session on the 6th and elected Councilor Hwang In-gu (The Democratic Party, Gangdong 4) as the Chairperson of the ‘Seoul Metropolitan Council Special Committee on Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Support.’
The Seoul Metropolitan Council Special Committee on Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Support is composed of a total of 15 councilors and is responsible for deriving continuous support measures at the council level to revitalize exchange and cooperation projects centered on local governments following the improvement of inter-Korean relations.
Chairperson Hwang In-gu, elected as the Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council Special Committee on Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Support, stated, “With the Moon Jae-in administration strengthening the institutional foundation of local autonomy and the expectation of progress and expansion in inter-Korean relations, local governments have emerged as key players in inter-Korean exchange and cooperation. I will strive to activate Seoul’s inter-Korean exchange policies to improve the currently stalled inter-Korean relations,” expressing his thoughts upon election.
Vice Chairpersons Lee Tae-sung (The Democratic Party, Songpa 4) and Kim Kyung-woo (The Democratic Party, Dongjak 2), elected on the same day, said respectively, “We will do our best to open the door to inter-Korean exchange and cooperation and to establish a foundation for unification,” and “We will ensure that the Seoul-Pyongyang urban cooperation project being carried out by Seoul becomes a successful model for local government inter-Korean exchange and cooperation projects.”
Led by Chairperson Hwang In-gu, the Seoul Metropolitan Council Special Committee on Inter-Korean Exchange and Cooperation Support plans to activate Seoul-Pyongyang urban cooperation projects such as the ‘Joint Bid for the 2032 Seoul-Pyongyang Summer Olympics’ and the ‘Seoul-Pyongyang Water Quality Improvement Project,’ while also seeking cooperation with other local governments to build consensus on inter-Korean exchange policies.
