Trump: "Closely Cooperating with Korea... As You Know, We Are Allies"
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] On the 6th (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump, during his visit to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), once again emphasized cooperation with Korea regarding the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
During a Q&A session with the press at the CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, President Trump was asked about Korea's drive-thru screening clinics and responded, "We are working very closely with Korea."
He continued, "They (Korea) are in a very different position from us. They have many infected cases, and we do not. But we are working very closely with Korea. As you know, we are allies."
President Trump briefly mentioned that despite the alliance between the two countries, the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) before its revision was unfair, then added, "The testing is very similar. We are working very closely. In fact, they call us to ask these people (CDC officials) for advice."
When asked a similar question, he emphasized, "They do not conduct testing but sample surveys. While passing by in a car, they provide samples. We can do that now too, but it is not as effective as what we are doing. We do comprehensive testing at one location. In Korea, they conduct sample surveys. It is very different."
Regarding whether Americans can feel comfortable, he said, "If you are currently considering going to China, certain areas in Italy, or Korea, that is a different decision," but added, "They should feel comfortable."
