Sohn Hak-kyu: "Ruling Party's Proportional Alliance Party is 'Unconstitutional and Illegal'... Satellite Parties Must Be Prevented"
The Goal of the Yeondonghyeong Proportional Representation System is 'Multi-Party System and Coalition Politics'
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Son Hak-kyu, former leader of the Bareunmirae Party and member of the Minsheng Party, stated on the 6th that the proportional alliance party being considered by the Democratic Party of Korea is “an unconstitutional and illegal party that violates the Constitution and election law, as it is clearly a satellite party of the Future Korea Party, which is the satellite party of the United Future Party, or a satellite party of the Democratic Party,” and emphasized that “the emergence of proportional satellite parties must be prevented.”
On Facebook that day, former leader Son said, “As the general election approaches, acts that deny democracy while only thinking about securing seats are rampant,” and added, “Following the establishment of the Future Korea Party, a satellite party of the Future United Party that directly contradicts the legislative intent of the mixed-member proportional representation system, the ruling party is also showing visible movements to establish a proportional satellite party.”
He pointed out, “The core goal of the mixed-member proportional representation system that I sought to achieve even through fasting is a multiparty system and coalition politics,” and “The emergence of proportional satellite parties is, in itself, a regression to the entrenched two major parties’ politics and nothing more than a restoration of old-fashioned politics.”
He continued, “If the proportional alliance party, which is a satellite party of the Democratic Party, is established and surrounding parties participate, what will happen in this election? Our people will once again be forced to choose only between the Democratic Party, which advocates progressivism, and the conservative united party, the Future United Party,” and added, “The following four years will be as predictable as watching fire. Extreme political confrontation divided again between conservatives and progressives will be repeated.”
Former leader Son said, “Coalition and alliance are political compromises made after elections to bring about smooth agreements on policy differences between parties, not to distort public opinion beforehand,” and “That is the form of coalition politics realized in European countries. We should also refrain from distorting public opinion and pre-election alliances solely for the purpose of gaining power, and instead prepare for multiparty coalition politics by receiving the people's judgment fairly through the mixed-member proportional representation system.”
