Global 5G Investment Hits $1 Trillion Over 5 Years... 1.8 Billion Subscribers Expected by 2025
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] An analysis has emerged that global 5G investment will reach about 1 trillion dollars (approximately 1,185 trillion won) over the next five years. It is predicted that the number of 5G subscribers will reach 1.8 billion by 2025. Additionally, the contribution of mobile technology and services to the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year was estimated to be around 4.1 trillion dollars.
On the 5th (local time), according to Mobile World Live and others, the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) recently announced this in its 'Mobile Economy 2020' report.
First, the capital expenditure (CAPEX) by global operators from 2020 to 2025 is estimated at 1.1 trillion dollars, of which 80% is related to 5G. GSMA mentioned manufacturing, public utilities, professional services, and financial services as industries benefiting from 5G investment. It is expected that by the end of 2034, there will be an additional effect of 2.2 trillion dollars on the global economy.
Mats Granryd, GSMA Director, appeared on CNBC Squawk Box on the same day and said, "Millions of consumers are already moving to the next-generation network (5G)," adding, "With 46 mobile operators in 24 countries commercializing 5G, 5G is becoming a reality, not just advertising." The number of 5G subscribers, currently in the millions, is projected to increase to 1.8 billion by 2025.
Furthermore, GSMA expects that by the end of this year, 5G commercialization will continue in various countries, accounting for 20% of the entire mobile network. However, despite the recent expansion of 5G, 4G still accounts for about 52% of the total as of the end of last year.
The contribution of mobile technology and services to the global GDP was estimated at 4.1 trillion dollars (4.7%) as of the end of last year. This is expected to expand to 4.9 trillion dollars (4.9%) by the end of 2024. Moreover, the mobile ecosystem is understood to directly impact more than 30 million jobs worldwide.

GSMA counted that as of the end of last year, mobile subscribers reached 5.2 billion, which is 67% of the world population. By the end of 2025, it is expected to increase to 5.8 billion, or 70% of the global population. Additionally, it was confirmed that 3.8 billion people, nearly half of the world population, are connected to and using mobile internet services. This number is also expected to rise to 5 billion by the end of 2025.
