Byeongpung 1-ri is an island village connected only by boat routes, where infrastructure has deteriorated due to sea winds and other factors, requiring maintenance of paths and safety facilities.
The selected Saetteul Village project will secure a total budget of 1.8 billion KRW (75% national funds, 9% provincial funds) by 2022 to expand the village’s infrastructure, including paving paths, drainage maintenance, parking lots and small parks, streetlight maintenance, and introduction of a wireless broadcasting system. Additionally, living and hygiene conditions will be greatly improved through demolition of vacant houses, slate roof repairs, and improvements to traditional toilets.
With the improvement of living conditions on Byeongpung Island, it is expected that the recently established Korean Santiago Pilgrimage Route ‘Miracle of the 12 Apostles Chapel’ and the ‘Celosia Festival’ held every October, which attract many visitors, will be further revitalized.
Governor Park Woo-ryang stated, “We will continue to actively respond to central government public contest projects to resolve inconveniences for residents in vulnerable villages and create clean and safe villages.”
