Gwangyang City to Invest a Total of 13.5 Billion Won in Taein-dong Urban Regeneration Project
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Gwangyang City, Jeonnam announced on the 4th that it will actively promote the Taein-dong urban regeneration project by investing a total of 13.5 billion KRW in six unit projects and 11 detailed projects, including community projects, cultural platform creation projects, and alleyway commercial district convenience facility projects.
In August 2018, the Yongji Village area in Taein-dong was selected for the Urban Regeneration New Deal Project contest. To simplify the promotion procedures, it was designated as a leading area by the Urban Regeneration Special Committee under the Prime Minister’s Office in December of the same year. In July last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport approved the activation plan, after which the detailed design service was commissioned and completed.
The Taein-dong urban regeneration project will carry out safety and secure village creation and living environment improvement projects in the Yongji Village area from 2019 to 2022.
This year’s project to be implemented is the ‘Cultural Yard Creation Project,’ which harmonizes history and culture. It will hold the large tug-of-war event, a traditional festival of Yongji Village, creating a space where local residents, merchants, cultural artists, and youth can communicate together.
To address the parking chaos caused by a lack of parking spaces and prevent illegal parking along the streets, a total of 16 parking spaces will be created as the ‘Yongji Open Parking Lot’ by utilizing idle land.
Additionally, a ‘Gaon Cafe’ will be established on the same site. The ‘Gaon Cafe’ is planned to be operated by personnel trained through silver barista education, which is expected to contribute not only to job creation but also to revitalizing the local economy.
The open parking lot and Gaon Cafe construction will start in February and are scheduled to be completed in June.
Along with this, to support the successful settlement of the Taein-dong Urban Regeneration New Deal Project and village community activities, the ‘Yongji Eoullim Center,’ a building with one basement floor and four above-ground floors, will be constructed.
The first floor above ground will be used as the Urban Regeneration Field Support Center and the Hae Exhibition Hall; the second floor will house the Taein Regional Children’s Center; the third floor will include a small library and children’s play facilities; and the fourth floor will serve as a health support center and small conference rooms.
The ‘Eoullim Center’ will be promoted through a design competition method to gather various ideas. After completing the detailed design service in June, construction will begin and is expected to be finished within this year.
In addition, a ‘Living Safety Street (fire road)’ with a total length of 230 meters and a width of 3 meters, passing through Yongji Village, will be opened to minimize damage to residents’ lives and property and to secure convenience for residents’ movement. The project will complete the Jeonnam Province design review in March, start construction, and finish within one year.
