Nikkei Index Closes Up 0.95%... Rebounds After Statement by Bank of Japan Governor
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] On the 2nd, major indices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in Japan closed higher following remarks by Haruhiko Kuroda, Governor of the Bank of Japan.
On that day, the Nikkei 225 index closed at 21,344.08, up 0.95% (201.12 points) from the previous trading day. The TOPIX index ended the session at 1,525.87, rising 0.99% (15.00 points).
The rise in Japan's major indices was driven by Governor Kuroda's remarks. In a special statement, Governor Kuroda pointed out, "Recently, unstable movements have continued as uncertainty about the future economy has increased due to the spread of COVID-19 infections in domestic and international financial and capital markets." He added, "The Bank of Japan will continue to monitor future trends and strive to ensure smooth funding supply and financial market stability through appropriate financial market adjustments and asset purchases."

The reason Governor Kuroda issued this special statement was that the Japanese stock market had sharply declined due to the spread of COVID-19. On that day, the Nikkei 225 and TOPIX indices initially opened down 1.39% and 1.45%, respectively, but rebounded after Governor Kuroda's statement was announced.
