"Missing Girlfriend"... Gangwon Army Private Goes AWOL by Taking a Taxi
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Seul-gi] A private first class belonging to an army unit in Gangwon Province deserted his post without permission, took a taxi, and traveled all the way to Incheon before being caught by the police.
On the 1st at around 9 p.m., the Gyeyang Police Station in Incheon received a report from a taxi driver that he was transporting a soldier who had escaped from a military base to Incheon.
It was confirmed that the taxi driver picked up the deserter in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, and was heading to Incheon when he made the report.
Responding to the report, the police apprehended Private First Class A (22), belonging to an army unit in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, on a road in Jakjeon-dong, Gyeyang-gu, Incheon.
It was found that Private A deserted his post at around 6:40 p.m. that day, called a taxi by phone, and traveled to Incheon.
During his escape by climbing over the barbed wire fence of the military base, Private A injured his finger and received treatment at a nearby hospital.

On the 2nd, a Gyeyang Police Station official stated, "It is believed that Private A deserted because he wanted to see his girlfriend," adding, "The military military police, who took custody of the private, will investigate the specific circumstances."
