Daegu District Prosecutors' Office Issues First Punishment for COVID-19 Fake News Distributor
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Ju Cheol-in] The Criminal Division 3 of Daegu District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Park Tae-ho) announced on the 24th that Mr. A was indicted without detention on charges of spreading fake news related to the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
This is the first case in Daegu and Gyeongbuk where someone has been punished for spreading fake news related to COVID-19.
Mr. A is accused of spreading fake news via SNS in mid-this month stating, "A hospital in Gyeongbuk is conducting tests on a COVID-19 patient, and the hospital is expected to be closed."
The Criminal Act stipulates that a person who obstructs another person's work by false facts shall be punished by imprisonment for up to 5 years or a fine of up to 15 million won.
