[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the morning of the 24th at 10 a.m., Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon held an emergency Safety Management Committee meeting at the Chungmu Confidential Room in Seoul City Hall to discuss strengthening the cooperation system among civilian, government, and military related agencies to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
The Seoul Safety Management Committee is established under the Framework Act on Disaster and Safety Management and the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Basic Ordinance on Disaster and Safety Management. It consists of a total of 40 members, including the Seoul Mayor, heads of various departments, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent, the Capital Defense Command Commander, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency Chief, the President of the Korean Red Cross Seoul Chapter, and heads of disaster management agencies.
This committee meeting was attended by 25 members, including the Seoul Mayor, heads of various departments, the Capital Defense Command Commander, the Deputy Chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, and the President of the Seoul Hospital Association of the Korean Hospital Association.
In his opening remarks, Mayor Park requested cooperation from the Chief of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency regarding restrictions on gatherings in the city center and urged responsible joint efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19. He stated, "As the response level to COVID-19 has been raised to the highest and most serious stage, bold and definite measures are necessary at this time. We have prohibited gatherings in city centers such as Gwanghwamun Square and Cheonggye Plaza, and have completed disinfection and closure measures of Shincheonji churches located in Seoul."
He continued, "Beyond the closure and disinfection of Shincheonji church spaces, accurate lists of Shincheonji members are needed to manage those who pose an actual risk of transmission," adding, "We hope the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency will take extraordinary measures as well."
He also requested the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to minimize inconvenience to citizens due to the one-week delay in the opening of kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools, and to thoroughly carry out school disinfection. Additionally, he asked for preparations to receive support from military medical institutions.
