Rapid Increase in Elderly Households, Single-Person Households, and Female Households in Seodaemun-gu
Sinchondong with Many Goshiwon, 92.5% of Basic Livelihood Recipients Are Single-Person Households... Seodaemun-gu Report Analyzes 2019 Population and Welfare Beneficiary Status and Trends
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seodaemun-gu (Mayor Moon Seok-jin) has published a report analyzing the status and trends of population and welfare recipients in the region in 2019 to provide more efficient and proactive welfare services.
This is based on the judgment that understanding and analyzing welfare recipients must precede in order to respond to the rapidly changing welfare environment.
According to the report, the number of 'potential welfare recipients' such as elderly households, single-person households, and female-headed households is rapidly increasing among the population of Seodaemun-gu.
The proportion of elderly population aged 65 and over was 16.6%, exceeding the Seoul city average (15.2%) by 1.4%, with Hongje 3-dong having the highest rate at 21.2% and Sinchon-dong the lowest at 11.7%.
The growth rate of female-headed households is about three times faster than the overall household growth rate, and single-person households account for 41% of the total. The area with the highest proportion of single-person households was Sinchon-dong (74.4%), and the lowest was Bukgajwa 1-dong (22.7%).
There are a total of 7,103 households and 9,224 people receiving basic livelihood security in Seodaemun-gu, accounting for 2.9% of the total population. This is a 20% increase compared to 2017. The main reason for the increase was analyzed as the 'relaxation of the support obligor criteria and system.'
More than 7 out of 10 basic livelihood recipients are single-person households, and more than 6 out of 10 recipients are unable to work.
Looking at the trends in age and household size of basic livelihood recipients, the number of single-person households increased by 25% and the number of household members aged 50 or older increased by 40% from 2017 to 2019, indicating that the increase in single-person and work-incapable households among recipients is expected to continue.
The area with the highest proportion of single-person households among recipients was Sinchon-dong (92.5%), and the lowest was Bukgajwa 1-dong (62.6%). The area with the highest elderly population proportion was Cheonyeon-dong (56.5%), and the lowest was Sinchon-dong (18.1%). According to these figures, Sinchon-dong has a relatively large number of young single-person recipients, while Cheonyeon-dong has a relatively large number of elderly single-person recipients.
Moon Seok-jin, Mayor of Seodaemun-gu, stated, "Based on the results of this statistical analysis, we will actively develop welfare services and policies tailored to the diverse welfare needs of various recipients that cannot be solved by the basic livelihood security system alone."
Such statistical data is also expected to be usefully utilized in appropriately expanding living SOC such as sports facilities, libraries, children's playgrounds, and elderly care spaces. Seodaemun-gu Office Social Welfare Division (330-1263)
