View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Son Tae-seok] Tongyeong City, Gyeongnam Province (Mayor Kang Seok-ju) announced on the 14th that it has been finally selected as a main project support target for the 2020 Smart Town Challenge (formerly Smart City Thematic Specialized Complex) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The Smart Town Challenge is a project that solves problems through a living lab based on citizen participation targeting a specific area smaller than a city unit, and establishes specialized solutions optimized for the business area within the city.
Having been selected for the preliminary project in 2019 and received a project budget of 225 million KRW to establish a plan, it was finally selected in this evaluation. Tongyeong City will receive 2 billion KRW in national funding for the project.
The city will promote an industry promotion specialized project, and as a plan to revitalize the local commercial district linking tourist spots centered on the traditional markets Seoho and Jungang Market, it plans to promote traditional market revitalization, operation management, and user convenience solutions.

Kang Seok-ju, Mayor of Tongyeong City, said, “With the selection of this project, it is expected to greatly help revitalize the local economy by newly reviving the local traditional market through the implementation of citizen needs-based solutions and linking with the tourism industry,” and added, “We will continue to do our best for the regional economic leap forward through discovering various projects.”
