View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Geum Bo-ryeong] Kim Jong-un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, paid tribute at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun to commemorate the 78th birthday of his father, Kim Jong-il, the former National Defense Commission Chairman (Kwangmyongsong Day, February 16).
According to North Korean media such as the Korean Central News Agency on the 16th, Chairman Kim, along with 'members of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party,' visited the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on Kwangmyongsong Day. This is the place where the bodies of President Kim Il-sung and National Defense Commission Chairman Kim Jong-il are enshrined.
The exact date of the tribute was not specified. Considering the precedent of paying respects at midnight on Kwangmyongsong Day, it is known that this time was likely similar.
This public activity by Chairman Kim is the first in 22 days since attending the Lunar New Year performance on the 25th of last month. Notably, it is also the first since North Korea declared a transition to a national emergency epidemic prevention system on the 28th of last month in response to the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
The media reported that Choe Ryong-hae, First Vice Chairman of the State Affairs Commission and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly, Pak Pong-ju, Vice Chairman of the State Affairs Commission and Party Vice Chairman, and Kim Jae-ryong, Premier of the Cabinet, accompanied him. Due to extensive measures to prevent COVID-19, the overall size of the delegation was significantly reduced.
In the photos released that day, the officials including Chairman Kim were not wearing masks. This is interpreted as following the etiquette of the tribute.
