Pompeo: "US Cooperates to Bring North Korea Back to Negotiation Table"
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated on the 15th (local time) that efforts are being made to cooperate so that North Korea can return to the negotiating table.
In his speech at the Munich Security Conference held in Munich, Germany, Secretary Pompeo said, "The United States is cooperating through international sanctions and global sanctions to prevent North Korea's nuclear weapons program development," adding, "We are cooperating to ensure that Pyongyang consistently returns to the negotiating table."
This is interpreted as a reaffirmation of the existing principle of pressuring North Korea through sanctions to bring it to the negotiating table. However, it is noteworthy that despite a recent series of negotiations reaching a deadlock, the possibility of a solution through dialogue was still expressed.
Pompeo's remarks came during an explanation of examples in a speech on the theme of "The West is Winning."
He emphasized the commitment provided by the United States in response to threats from China and Russia. Secretary Pompeo mentioned, "The United States is leading military exercises with NATO member countries in Europe." He also referred to North Korea's denuclearization, protection of the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, and efforts to defeat the Islamic State (IS).
