Gochang-gun Transforms Urban Hills and Vacant Lots into Ecological Parks
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Kim Jae-gil] On the 14th, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk announced that on the 13th, in the Ministry of Environment’s ‘Ecosystem Conservation Cooperation Fund Return Project Review Results,’ Gochang-gun’s ‘Borikkol Forest Ecological Restoration Project (part of the planned Morobiri Park site)’ was finally selected, and the entire project cost of 500 million KRW will be funded by the national government.
Seokgyo-ri area in Gochang-eup, one of the long-term unexecuted parks, is located at a major gateway entering or exiting Gochang. However, for several years, illegal cultivation by local residents has taken place, and it has been recognized as a high-risk area where agricultural materials and tools were abandoned.
Accordingly, part of the long-term unexecuted park land, which is a headache for local governments nationwide, will be transformed into an eco-friendly ecological rest space for local residents through a fully nationally funded project. The county plans to start the restoration project next month and complete it by the end of the year.
The core of the project is to restore the overgrown wild mountain into an oak tree community to serve as a habitat for ecological protection species (lesser spotted woodpecker, Korean swallowtail butterfly).
Additionally, a wildflower garden and an observation deck will be prepared so that residents and local students can enjoy ecological learning and comfortable leisure activities.
Yoo Ki-sang, the mayor of Gochang-gun, said, “We will continuously discover damaged habitats to restore natural ecosystems and create ecological rest spaces. We will continue to enhance the status of the ‘UNESCO Biosphere Reserve’ by creating ecological spaces where humans and nature coexist.”
