[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Han Sang-hyuk, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, stated on the 13th regarding COVID-19 that "(regional media companies) need to further strengthen their disaster broadcasting functions by timely providing the latest updates on the infectious disease."
At a media meeting held that day with representatives from the Daejeon and Chungcheong regions, Chairman Han said, "Broadcasting and other media need to make efforts to correct confusion through thorough verification such as fact-checking regarding unconfirmed information related to COVID-19," adding, "Public trust and cooperation are important to overcome COVID-19, and I hope this infectious disease overcoming process becomes an opportunity to increase social trust."
Meanwhile, representatives of regional broadcasters suggested the need to establish systems to maintain regional characteristics, considering the difficulties caused by the rapidly changing media environment.

In response, Chairman Han said, "Regional characteristics are an indispensable value even in the broadcasting and communications environment of the global competition era," and added, "Visiting the regions as the first field activity this year shows how much the KCC is interested in regional media. We will listen to voices from the field and review various measures." The KCC plans to hold regional media policy meetings by area starting with today's meeting, and the opinions presented will be actively reflected in regional broadcasting policies.
