Korean Party: "GSOMIA Termination and Employment Extension Card, Election Populism"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Recently, as the possibility of terminating the Korea-Japan military information protection agreement (GSOMIA) has been rising, the Liberty Korea Party strongly criticized it as a populist policy ahead of the election. They also raised critical voices against President Moon Jae-in's 'employment extension' card, calling it an election-driven policy.
On the 12th, Park Yong-chan, spokesperson for the Liberty Korea Party, stated in a commentary, "The 'GSOMIA termination' and 'employment extension' cards brought up by the Moon Jae-in government just over two months before the April 15 general election are clearly populist policies for election purposes."
Spokesperson Park said, "Bringing up GSOMIA again to provoke anti-Japanese sentiment and, along with that, trying to win voters' favor through employment extension is a calculated move," adding, "the GSOMIA termination attempt pushed by the Moon Jae-in government last November has been proven to be a complete diplomatic failure."
He said, "There is a great concern that it could shake the foundation of national security, and many citizens gathered in Gwanghwamun to strongly oppose it. Moreover, the memory of how there was little effective check against Japan's export restrictions still remains vivid," adding, "yet the GSOMIA card was brought up again out of urgency to win the general election at all costs."
