Choi Ki-young: "Leap to AI Powerhouse Depends on Securing Talent"
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 12th, Choi Ki-young, Minister of Science and ICT, stated, "The leap to becoming a leading AI (Artificial Intelligence) powerhouse ultimately depends on securing excellent AI talent."
Minister Choi made this remark while announcing the policy to expand and reorganize AI graduate schools, saying, "The government will enhance both the quantitative and qualitative levels of AI education, while also devising additional support measures to secure AI talent early and generate results."
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that it will select and support seven additional AI graduate schools this year. Last year, AI graduate school programs were first selected at KAIST, GIST, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, and POSTECH. In addition to the existing 'Advanced and Specialized Courses' within the AI graduate school programs, a new 'AI Convergence Course' will be created to broaden the range of options. Through this, the ministry plans to accelerate the cultivation of not only top-level AI experts who design and develop AI algorithms and systems but also AI convergence talents.
To ensure that the innovation plans of universities wishing to operate AI graduate school programs are properly evaluated, the size of the evaluation committee will be increased. Participation of top experts in the AI field as evaluators will be encouraged to strengthen expertise. Starting this year, the evaluation will reflect related plans to spread AI education and research within universities beyond departmental boundaries.

Furthermore, an AI Graduate School Council will be formed to increase exchange and cooperation by sharing excellent educational and research outcomes and data. Various support measures will also be prepared, including the establishment of joint education and research platforms for AI graduate schools and the recruitment of overseas AI experts as faculty members. The announcement for the AI graduate school program will be held from the 13th until March 13, with the selection of new graduate schools and agreements to be completed in April.
