'Parasite' Cast and Staff Return Home "Thanks to the Nation's Support for Our 4 Academy Awards"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] The cast and staff of the film Parasite, which won four awards including Best Picture at the Academy Awards, returned home triumphantly on the 12th. Actors Song Kang-ho, Cho Yeo-jeong, Lee Sun-kyun, Jang Hye-jin, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Park Myung-hoon, along with Barunson E&A CEO Kwak Shin-ae, writer Han Jin-won, art director Lee Ha-joon, and editing director Yang Jin-mo arrived at Incheon International Airport Terminal 2 at around 5:15 a.m. Director Bong Joon-ho is currently in the United States and will return next week.
The actors and staff who appeared at the arrival hall showed bright expressions despite the grueling Oscar race and long flight. With bare faces and casual attire, they waved and greeted about 90 reporters and fans.
CEO Kwak Shin-ae said, “Thank you so much for coming out so early in the morning and welcoming us. I feel grateful and also sorry,” adding, “We will arrange a separate date to meet properly.”
Song Kang-ho, who completed the Oscar race with Director Bong, said, “Director Bong Joon-ho could not return with us due to other schedules, but we are here to greet you on our own,” and added, “I believe we achieved such great results because of your continuous support and encouragement.” He continued, “We will do our best to introduce Korea’s outstanding culture and arts to movie fans around the world through good Korean films in the future.”
The other actors and staff gave brief greetings and then left. They plan to share more detailed impressions at a press conference arranged after Director Bong’s return.
Parasite won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards held on the 9th (local time) at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It was the first time in the 92-year history of the Oscars that a foreign-language film won the top prize. This was a result of overcoming both the barrier of subtitles and the Academy’s conservative traditions in Hollywood, the center of the global film industry.
Riding on the success of the awards, Parasite ranked 4th at the North American box office on the 10th. The cumulative ticket revenue reached $36,033,741 (approximately 42.59 billion KRW), making it the sixth highest-grossing non-English language film ever released in North America. Nearly 1,000 additional screens will be added this weekend, and it is expected to soon surpass Pan’s Labyrinth (with $37,634,615), which currently holds the fifth position.
