Seoul City Reports 78% Decrease in Parking of Grade 5 Emission Vehicles
Explanation of the 50% Increase in Parking Fees Effect
[Asia Economy Reporter Osangdo] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 12th that the number of parked vehicles classified as Grade 5 emission vehicles in city-operated parking lots decreased by 78% after the parking fee for these vehicles was increased by 50% as a measure against fine dust. During the same period, the total number of parked vehicles decreased by 4.1%.
According to Seoul City, in the one month following the parking fee increase on the 1st of last month, the average daily number of Grade 5 vehicles parked in 106 city-operated parking lots across Seoul was 111, a 78.0% (393 vehicles) decrease compared to December of last year (an average of 504 vehicles per day). Consequently, the proportion of Grade 5 vehicles among all parked vehicles in city-operated parking lots dropped by 1.6 percentage points, from 2.0% in December last year to 0.4% last month.
The reduction was even more significant in the Green Transportation Zone within the Four Great Gates, where the operation of Grade 5 vehicles has been continuously restricted since December last year. In 22 city-operated parking lots within the Green Transportation Zone, the decrease rate of Grade 5 vehicle parking reached 87.2% (from an average of 141 vehicles per day to 18 vehicles).

Seoul City expects that the decrease in the number of parked vehicles due to the fee increase will contribute to reducing fine dust. Accordingly, the city is considering maintaining the increased parking fees even after the seasonal fine dust management system ends.
