Min Hyung-bae Preliminary Candidate Criticizes Liberty Korea Party's Disregard for Honam Region
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Min Hyung-bae, the Democratic Party preliminary candidate for the National Assembly election in Gwangsan-gu (Eul), Gwangju Metropolitan City, strongly criticized the repeated acts of ignoring Honam by the Liberty Korea Party and urged an apology.
On the 11th, Min issued a press release expressing his position on the recent provocation by Liberty Korea Party lawmaker Kim Moo-sung, who said he would not hesitate to run in Honam if it meant judging the current regime.
Min strongly criticized, saying, "This is a show to incite regional sentiment during the general election phase, and Gwangju will become Kim Moo-sung's grave."
He added, "If Representative Kim thinks that Jeonnam Textile, founded by his father, is based in Gwangju, it is a grave misjudgment," pointing out, "Jeonnam Textile was a company that grew after Chairman Kim Yong-ju, his father, acquired the Gwangju factory of the former Japanese-owned company Gabone Textile in 1951 together with Kim Hyung-nam, a former U.S. military government interpreter, and fundamentally, it should have been returned to the citizens of Gwangju and Jeonnam."
He also mentioned Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the Liberty Korea Party, who made a reckless remark about the May 18 Democratic Uprising, saying, "In 1980, there was some kind of incident."
Min said, "This is an example showing the crude historical awareness of Hwang, a former public prosecutor," and argued, "Isn't this the reason why, even now, on the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, the main perpetrators of the massacre have not been punished and the truth has not been fully uncovered?"
He continued, "In the 21st National Assembly, we will extend the activity period of the May 18 Truth Commission and enact the 'Law on Punishment of Historical Distortion,' covering from the Japanese colonial period to the present, to punish those who deny the truth and make reckless remarks."
