[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] A soldier who opened fire at a Thai military base and a shopping mall, killing and injuring at least 51 people, was shot dead after taking hostages.
According to foreign media on the 8th (local time), in Nakhon Ratchasima City, Thailand, a soldier opened fire, killing at least 21 people and injuring more than 30. The perpetrator moved around the military base and a downtown shopping mall, shooting and causing many casualties.
Authorities evacuated hundreds of people, closed the shopping mall, and deployed troops. During the confrontation between the troops and the shooter, one member of the Thai security forces was killed and two were injured. It was reported that eight Koreans present at the scene were evacuated.
AP quoted the Thai Minister of Health as saying that at least 21 people died and 33 were injured in the incident. Additionally, 10 of the injured were in serious condition and were transported to the hospital, raising concerns that the death toll may increase.
At around 3:30 p.m. on the 8th, at a military base near Nakhon Ratchasima City, located 250 km northeast of Bangkok, the Thai capital, Sergeant First Class Chakraphan Thomma (32) shot and killed the base commander and the commander's mother-in-law.
Sergeant Chakraphan then seized firearms and ammunition from the base armory, stole a military vehicle, and arrived at the 'Terminal 21 Korat Mall' downtown around 6 p.m., where he opened fire.
Thai police explained, according to AP, that the perpetrator committed the crime out of anger over a land-related dispute. A police spokesperson said, "We believe the dispute over land sale payments may be the cause of the incident, but the exact cause has not yet been determined."
