"Will Give Up Admission" Sookmyung Women's University Transgender Admitted Student Ultimately Withdraws Admission
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Ju-hee] A, who underwent gender reassignment surgery from male to female and was admitted to Sookmyung Women's University in the 2020 academic year college entrance exam, has announced that she will forgo enrollment.
On the 7th, 'Seoul Economy' reported that A expressed her intention to give up enrollment due to the burden of public opposition surrounding her admission. In a phone interview with the media, A said, "After the news of my acceptance was announced and opposition to my enrollment arose, I felt scared."
A stated that she will prepare again for next year's college entrance exam. However, she said, "I don't think I will apply to women's universities again," indicating plans to attend a coeducational university.
Earlier, on the 30th of last month, Sookmyung Women's University announced that A had been finally admitted to the College of Law in the 2020 academic year freshman selection.
However, on the 4th, 21 organizations from six women's universities in the Seoul area, including Duksung Women's University, Dongduk Women's University, Seoul Women's University, Sungshin Women's University, Sookmyung Women's University, and Ewha Womans University, issued a statement opposing gender change that threatens women's rights, saying, "Women's universities are not a means for men to be recognized as women."
In response, alumni of Sookmyung Women's University posted an online joint signature titled "Welcoming the student who was finally admitted to Sookmyung Women's University as a transgender person in the name of alumni," expressing support for the student.

The alumni stated, "We welcome the final admission of a woman who has undergone the transgender process to Sookmyung Women's University in 2020," adding, "She passed confidently by meeting the required scores and procedural conditions for admission," and expressed strong concern over attempts to divide 'real women' and 'fake women' based on insufficient understanding and stereotypes about transgender people.
