[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The 300,000 citizens of Yeosu expressed great anticipation and welcomed the establishment of advanced departments submitted by Chonnam National University Yeosu Campus to the Ministry of Education.
According to Yeosu City on the 7th, an opinion letter was submitted to the Ministry of Education, along with 300,000 Yeosu citizens, welcoming the application for the establishment of advanced departments, which will be the first step toward normalizing Chonnam National University Yeosu Campus.
This follows the application last month by Chonnam National University Yeosu Campus to the Ministry of Education for the establishment of advanced departments under the ‘2021 Academic Year Student Quota Adjustment Plan,’ part of the Ministry of Education’s deregulation policy.
The application includes one department and two majors: the Department of Petrochemical Materials Engineering, the Department of Smart Fisheries Resource Management, and the Division of Healthcare Medical Engineering, totaling 130 students.
In the opinion letter, the city stated, “Since the integration of Chonnam National University and Yeosu University in 2006, the memorandum of understanding, including the establishment of a Korean Medicine College, has not been fulfilled, and financial support has been reduced, causing the Yeosu Campus’s quota to decrease every year, resulting in approximately 15 billion KRW in direct and indirect losses annually.” It added, “The crisis and downsizing of local universities lead not only to regional economic stagnation due to the decline in the young population but also to the risk of local extinction.”
Furthermore, it said, “Yeosu has the largest petrochemical complex in Korea, the Yeosu National Industrial Complex, and is adjacent to the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone, providing optimal locational conditions for the establishment of advanced departments.” It added, “We earnestly hope, together with all citizens, for the establishment of advanced departments that will bring great vitality to the local community.”

Meanwhile, the establishment of advanced departments will be decided by the end of February through the Ministry of Education’s review based on the relevance to advanced fields and the feasibility of linkage and utilization plans with local industries, and will be applied from the 2021 academic year admissions.
