Mapo-gu Establishes New War Veteran Honor Allowance (30,000 KRW) and Increases Veterans' Courtesy Allowance (30,000 KRW)
New 30,000 KRW Monthly Mapo-gu War Veteran Honor Allowance Established, Mapo-gu Veterans' Welfare Allowance Increased by 10,000 KRW Monthly; About 1,600 of 3,330 Veterans Expected to Receive New Honor Allowance
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) has established the ‘Mapo-gu Veterans Honor Allowance’ for veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, while expanding support for veterans affairs.
In October last year, the district revised the Seoul Metropolitan Government Mapo-gu Ordinance on the Treatment and Support of National Veterans to establish a legal basis, and from January 2020, it has been providing a monthly honor allowance of 30,000 KRW to veterans.
The ‘Mapo-gu Veterans Honor Allowance’ is paid to veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War who have resided in Mapo-gu for more than three months, regardless of age or income level.
Additionally, to honor veterans and contribute to their welfare enhancement, it allows for overlapping payments with the ‘Seoul City Veterans Honor Allowance.’
However, if recipients receive other veterans-related allowances under national veterans-related laws and ordinances other than the ‘Seoul City Veterans Honor Allowance,’ payments are excluded based on the principle of prohibition of duplicate benefits.
Also, the ‘Mapo-gu Veterans Welfare Allowance,’ newly established in February last year and paid at 20,000 KRW per month, has been increased by 10,000 KRW to 30,000 KRW per month starting January this year. The recipients are ‘other veterans who are not war veterans,’ and payments are made on the 15th of each month.
Among the veterans who were previously receiving the ‘Mapo-gu Veterans Welfare Allowance,’ those who are war veterans will receive the ‘Mapo-gu Veterans Honor Allowance’ preferentially. Accordingly, the district sent a notice by mail in January informing existing welfare allowance recipients of the change to the honor allowance.
If national veterans who have not yet applied for the Veterans Honor Allowance or the Veterans Welfare Allowance have not received support, they can apply at their local community service center with relevant documents such as their national veterans ID and a copy of their bankbook.
