Samsung SDI "Our Batteries Have No Causal Relationship with ESS Fires"
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] As the government announced the investigation results of the ESS (Energy Storage System) fire accident on the 6th, Samsung SDI stated that its batteries have no causal relationship with the ESS fire.
Samsung SDI released a statement saying, "The batteries from Gangwon Pyeongchang and Gyeongnam Gimhae announced by the investigation team are batteries from sites other than the fire scenes," and explained, "The investigation team's analysis was based on batteries manufactured at the same time but installed and operated at different sites, not the sites where the fires occurred."
The company argued, "If the investigation team's results are correct, fires should have also occurred at similar sites where the same batteries were applied."
Furthermore, Samsung SDI emphasized, "The large voltage deviation pointed out by the investigation team as one of the causes of the fire is not a condition for battery fire occurrence," and added, "The large voltage deviation claimed by the investigation team is data from a state of low charge rate, which means a difference in a state without energy, so a fire cannot occur."
They continued, "The battery protection device in Gangwon Pyeongchang operated normally," and "The operational data presented by the investigation team is from three months before the fire occurred and is presumed to be misinterpreted."
Samsung SDI explained, "Although the ESS fire ignition point started from the battery, the causes of the fire are diverse," and stated, "Generally, a fire occurs only when an ‘ignition source (heat)’ that can ignite a fire, ‘oxygen’ that sustains the fire, and ‘combustible material (fuel)’ that spreads the fire exist simultaneously."

For example, they argued, "Gasoline requires an ignition source like a match flame to catch fire; gasoline itself does not ignite," and "In ESS, the battery is the only component that holds energy, so it acts as combustible material that spreads the fire, but it is not the ignition source."
