Gwanak-gu Creates 'Green Curtains' on Exterior Walls of Two Daycare Centers
Selection of Two Municipal Daycare Centers in March for 'Green Curtain' Installation... Enhancing Thermal Energy Efficiency to Reduce Costs, with Added Benefits of Fine Dust Blocking and Mental Well-being
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Junhee) is expected to achieve a triple effect of energy saving, fine dust blocking, and urban green space creation through the 'Green Curtain Installation Project.'
The district announced that as part of this year's green city creation project, it will invest 12 million KRW to install 'green curtains' on the exterior walls of two daycare center buildings.
The 'Green Curtain' is a technique where annual climbing plants such as morning glory and hyacinth bean grow along nets and ropes to form a curtain-like greenery on building exteriors.
The main effect is blocking sunlight from entering the building interior, lowering indoor temperatures by nearly 5℃ during summer, thereby helping to save energy.
The transpiration of the climbing plants and the dust-absorbing broad leaves effectively block surrounding fine dust, contributing to indoor air purification.
Moreover, increasing urban green spaces helps mitigate the urban heat island effect, improving air pollution, reducing roadside noise, and blocking dust, among various other benefits.
Additionally, the green plant curtains have the advantage of calming the mind and body and visually reducing the sensation of heat.
The district plans to select two suitable public daycare centers for installation in March, finalize the sites, and complete the project by May.
Through this 'Green Curtain' installation, it is expected to take a step closer to establishing an eco-friendly energy ecological city foundation and enable a more efficient fine dust prevention system for vulnerable groups using plants.
Gwanak-gu is carrying out various fine dust prevention projects to create an environment where residents can breathe freely without worrying about fine dust, including ▲supporting 'air purifier operating costs' for facilities used by vulnerable groups such as welfare centers ▲distributing 'indoor air quality monitors' to private and home daycare centers ▲providing 'real-time fine dust information alerts' to senior centers.
