Trump Highlights Economic Achievements Without Mentioning Impeachment: "America's Future Shines Bright"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] In the State of the Union address held on the 4th (local time), ahead of the presidential election this November, U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned economic achievements, stating that he had achieved incredible results during his three-year term.
President Trump delivered his third State of the Union address since taking office and his last before the November election at the House chamber in Washington, D.C., saying, "Three years ago, we began the 'Great American Comeback.' The future of America is bright." During the address, Trump appeared to use the occasion to appeal his accomplishments one by one, almost like an election campaign rally. He made no mention whatsoever of the ongoing impeachment proceedings.
President Trump said, "In just a short period of three years, we have shattered the mindset that America is in decline and rejected the notion that America's destiny is fading," adding, "We are moving forward at an unimaginable pace in a short time, and we will never go back."
He particularly emphasized that the U.S. economy has revived. He stated, "Years of economic decline are over. Our economy is the best ever," and stressed, "From the moment I took office, we moved quickly to revive the American economy." He cited deregulation, tax cuts, job growth, and low unemployment rates as achievements.
President Trump highlighted, "Since my election, we have created 7 million new jobs," which he said is more than the 5 million created under the previous administration. He boasted, "The unemployment rate is the lowest in half a century," and "Incredibly, the average unemployment rate under my administration is lower than any other administration in U.S. history." He also mentioned that while over 300,000 working-age people left the labor force during the previous eight years, 3.5 million joined within his three years in office, and that 12,000 factories have been added since he took power.
Regarding trade policy, he evaluated the U.S.-China trade agreement as a new milestone and emphasized that, unlike previous politicians, he "kept his promise" by revising the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and signing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The White House also cited the revision of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) as a trade achievement in a separate explanatory document.
