Gyeonggi Province and Suwon City Join Forces to Expedite Construction of Shinbundang Line from Gwanggyo to Homaesil
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is joining forces with Suwon City to expedite the Shinbundang Line Gwanggyo~Homaesil project, which recently passed the preliminary feasibility study.
On the 3rd, Gyeonggi Province and Suwon City signed a memorandum of understanding at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government Situation Room, attended by Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung, Suwon Mayor Yeom Tae-young, and National Assembly members Kim Young-jin and Baek Hye-ryun, agreeing to jointly work toward the early commencement of the Shinbundang Line Gwanggyo~Homaesil project.
According to the agreement, the province will submit a joint petition with Suwon City to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to ensure the early start of the Shinbundang Line Gwanggyo~Homaesil project.
The petition will include a request to initiate follow-up procedures such as establishing a basic plan to enhance transportation welfare by expanding transportation services for residents in the southwestern Gyeonggi region, an area underserved by railway services.
Additionally, the province will actively support the implementation of related procedures and administrative assistance to ensure the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport promptly proceeds with the establishment of the basic plan.
The Shinbundang Line Gwanggyo~Homaesil project is a 9.7 km railway with four stations connecting Suwon’s Gwanggyo Jungang Station to Homaesil, linking with the Indeogwon~Dongtan Line and the Gyeongbu Line.
After the basic plan was announced in 2006, the project was delayed for a long time due to issues such as feasibility, but it became feasible after passing the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance on the 15th of last month.
If the project proceeds smoothly, the travel time from Suwon Homaesil to Seoul (Gangnam) will be reduced to 47 minutes, cutting about 50 minutes compared to the current bus travel time.
Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung said, "I am pleased that the Shinbundang Line Gwanggyo~Homaesil project, one of the biggest long-standing wishes of residents in western Suwon, will be smoothly promoted through this agreement," adding, "As it is a major issue for Gyeonggi Province, we will do our utmost to swiftly expand infrastructure and complete the project."
