Kim Hong-hee, Chief of Namhae Coast Guard, Inspects Ulsan Crude Oil Buoy Accident Site
Thorough Safety Management Urged to Prepare for Pollution Accidents
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Yoseop] On the 3rd, Kim Honghee, Commissioner of the Namhae Maritime Police Agency, visited the site of the S-Oil crude oil buoy spill accident near Ulsan Ganjeolgot to inspect and assess the situation.
According to the Namhae Maritime Police, on the 29th of last month, a buoy, which is an offshore crude oil transfer facility of S-Oil, was damaged in the sea near Ulsan Ganjeolgot, causing an oil spill. With the mobilization of 44 units including the Ulsan Maritime Police Rescue Team and oil spill response vessels, an emergency response was launched, and the spill was contained within about five hours without major damage.
Commissioner Kim, who boarded a patrol vessel to inspect the accident site that day, stated, "In the case of a crude oil buoy spill accident, it can escalate into a major incident threatening not only the marine ecosystem but also the livelihoods of fishermen," and added, "Thanks to the dedicated efforts of the staff, the accident was managed early," encouraging the employees for their hard work.
Commissioner Kim also met with S-Oil officials to discuss the urgent repair of the damaged crude oil buoy and safety management plans.
