[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) announced on the 3rd that on the 1st (local time), it held an opening ceremony for the ‘LG Inverter Class,’ a technical training center for air conditioner maintenance technicians, at the Korea-Bangladesh Vocational Training Center located in Chittagong, southeastern Bangladesh, in collaboration with LG Electronics and the Bangladesh Vocational Training Authority.

About 70 people attended the opening ceremony, including Cho Hyun-kyu, head of KOICA Bangladesh Office, and Son Dong-gon, branch manager of LG Electronics from the Korean side, and Imran Ahmed, Minister of Overseas Employment and Welfare, Ahmed Sarahin, Deputy Secretary of Overseas Employment and Welfare, and Mujafa Ahmed, Director of Overseas Employment and Welfare from the Bangladesh side.

In Bangladesh, there is a shortage of local technicians capable of repairing inverter air conditioners sold by Korean companies. To cultivate local technical personnel that meet Bangladesh’s industrial demand, KOICA collaborated with LG Electronics to establish the ‘LG Inverter Class’ in Chittagong, an international port city, to provide training on inverter air conditioner maintenance technology.

The newly established ‘LG Inverter Class’ operates through an industry-academia cooperation with the Korea-Bangladesh Vocational Training Center in Chittagong, which KOICA built in 2013. Among students who have completed the basic and intermediate air conditioning courses at the vocational training center, a total of 50 students (two classes of 25 students each) are selected to take the advanced ‘LG Inverter Class.’ KOICA and LG Electronics selected trainees prior to the opening ceremony, giving priority to vulnerable groups such as women and low-income individuals.

The training program consists of 8 weeks of classes and practical training at the vocational training center, followed by an 8-week internship program with LG Electronics’ local partners, totaling 16 weeks. Graduates receive certificates issued jointly by KOICA, LG Electronics, and the Bangladesh Vocational Training Authority.

Cho Hyun-kyu, head of KOICA Bangladesh Office, said, “Before Chittagong, the ‘LG Inverter Class’ was operated in the capital Dhaka for a total of 40 students (two classes of 20 students each), and among the first class of 20 students, 17 were employed by LG Electronics’ local partner service centers.” He added, “KOICA contributes to the self-reliance of vulnerable groups in Bangladesh through employment-linked education, while LG Electronics creates a win-win development cooperation model by employing skilled technicians and establishing a local foothold.”

Meanwhile, KOICA has been conducting vocational training projects in Bangladesh for over 10 years. In 2018, KOICA signed a tripartite MOU with LG Electronics and the Bangladesh Vocational Training Authority to promote the ‘Bangladesh Technical Education and Youth Employment Enhancement Project.’

As part of this project, the Korea-Bangladesh Vocational Training Center in Chittagong, where the ‘LG Inverter Class’ was established, has been recognized locally for excellence, being the only one among 38 vocational training centers in Bangladesh designated as an institution conducting competency-based training and assessment (CBT-A). KOICA plans to continue expanding cooperation in vocational training with the Bangladesh government to contribute to the development of technical personnel and income increase for vulnerable groups.
