Dongdaemun-gu Expands Support for Maternal and Newborn Health Care Services
Dongdaemun-gu Provides Additional 90% Support for Maternal and Newborn Health Care Service Copayments for Low-Income Families... Enacts 'Dongdaemun-gu Maternal and Newborn Health Care Copayment Support Ordinance' to Alleviate Economic Burden on Low-Income Families
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) is enacting the 'Dongdaemun-gu Maternal and Newborn Health Management Out-of-Pocket Expense Support Ordinance' to alleviate the financial burden on low-income families with newborns and to assist in maternal and newborn health care.
Additionally, for low-income families using the 'Maternal and Newborn Health Management Service,' the district will provide an additional 90% support for out-of-pocket expenses on top of existing government subsidies.
The Maternal and Newborn Health Management Service involves a maternal and newborn health care worker visiting the mother's home after the mother applies for support through the local health center or the Bokjiro website before or after childbirth, providing services for postpartum recovery such as nutrition, laundry, hygiene, and breastfeeding management for the mother and newborn.
The existing Ministry of Health and Welfare support targets families with childbirth whose income is at or below 100% of the median income, with government subsidies varying according to the median income. Seoul City's support targets mothers residing in Seoul regardless of income criteria.
For low-income families with addresses in Dongdaemun-gu, including recipients of basic livelihood security, near-poverty class, persons with disabilities with income at or below 120% of the median income, those with rare and intractable diseases, North Korean defectors, marriage immigrants, and single mothers, the district will additionally support 90% of the out-of-pocket expenses not covered by government and Seoul City subsidies.

You Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “Mothers who find it difficult to receive family support after childbirth say that the maternal and newborn health care worker service is very helpful, but even with government subsidies, out-of-pocket expenses occur, which inevitably become a financial burden for low-income families. The district will support up to 90% of out-of-pocket expenses so that low-income families can use the service without burden, and we hope many will take advantage of this.”
