Ministry of Science and ICT Announces Recruitment for Head of 'Northeast Asia Ultrafine Dust Response' Project Team
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced that starting from the 30th, it will open applications for the project leader of the "Northeast Asia-Regional Linked Ultrafine Dust Response Technology Development Project" for 30 days to effectively promote new research and development (R&D) projects such as scientific analysis and establishment of an international cooperative research base to solve the fine dust problem.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to select the top expert in the related field as the project leader through an in-depth evaluation and grant them the authority to manage the project and the responsibility for achieving results over the next five years. Through an in-depth evaluation by a selection evaluation committee composed of experts, the project leader will be selected by April, and the selected project leader will form a project team (research team) responsible for research in the four fields mentioned above by July.
This year's new industry in the fine dust field, 'Northeast Asia-Regional Linked Ultrafine Dust Response Technology Development,' is promoted in four areas: phenomenon identification, medium-term forecasting, mid-to-long-term outlook, and customized management, with the purpose of understanding ultrafine dust in more detail and finding more effective response methods.
The phenomenon identification field conducts research to scientifically clarify the detailed physical and chemical characteristics and change processes of high-concentration ultrafine dust. It also establishes a cooperative system among Korean, Chinese, and Japanese researchers by conducting simultaneous joint measurements to identify the characteristics of ultrafine dust generation in the Northeast Asia region, and utilizes observation data from the Cheollian Satellite 2B, scheduled to be launched in February this year, to analyze long-distance movement and foreign influences of ultrafine dust.
The medium-term forecasting field involves research to develop a medium-term prediction modeling system reflecting Korea's meteorological environment and ultrafine dust characteristics, which is expected to contribute to improving forecast accuracy when applied to the fine dust forecasting system. The mid-to-long-term outlook field conducts research analyzing changes in ultrafine dust emissions according to mid-to-long-term fine dust policies of Northeast Asian countries and deriving Korea's fine dust reduction scenarios. Additionally, the customized management field conducts research to identify regional characteristics of high-concentration ultrafine dust phenomena and to demonstrate and evaluate customized reduction measures.
