Busan Police Agency Intensifies Crackdown on Major Wanted Fugitives
Targeting Violent Criminals, Fraud and Corruption Offenders
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Yoseop] The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency has declared war on major wanted criminals.
On the 28th, the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency announced that it has selected the "Intensive Arrest Campaign for Major Wanted Persons" as a strategic task to be promoted year-round in order to eradicate and prevent serious crimes that threaten the daily lives of citizens.
Major wanted persons include ▲violent criminals (murder, robbery, sexual violence, drugs, arson, assault, theft) ▲economic offenders causing large-scale or multiple damages, corruption and fraud offenders ▲those with imminent statute of limitations ▲and other long-unsolved cases deemed requiring prompt arrest.
To this end, at the beginning of each month, the police station chiefs will organize the selection of targets for pursuit by each station and form dedicated investigation teams to carry out intensive arrest activities. During the arrest process, strict compliance with due legal procedures will be ensured, and even after arrest, human rights protection measures such as the right to legal counsel and prohibition of late-night interrogations will be implemented.

Kim Chang-ryong, Commissioner of the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency, expressed his expectation that "through the proactive arrest of major wanted persons, additional crimes committed by fugitives during their escape will be suppressed and prevented, and by instilling the awareness that those who commit crimes will inevitably be arrested and punished, this will also contribute to crime deterrence."
