Consumption of Spicy and Sweet Foods Increases During Seollal Holiday
Yogiyo, Analysis of 'Delivery App Order Trends During the Seol Season'
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Consumption of spicy food has increased during the Lunar New Year holidays over the past three years. Cafe and dessert menus have also gained popularity. Many people seek spicy and sweet foods during the holiday season.
On the 23rd, Delivery Hero Korea (CEO Kang Shin-bong) revealed the results of an analysis of order data during the Lunar New Year holiday season from 2017 to 2019 through the delivery application (hereafter app) "Yogiyo".
The number of orders for foods containing the word "spicy" increased more than threefold compared to the week before the holiday each year. Overall orders during the holiday period also showed a trend of doubling annually. Yogiyo analyzed that this phenomenon occurred as more people tried to counter the greasiness of holiday foods, which are often cooked with oil, with spicy flavors and relieve holiday stress.

Kim Hyun-deuk, head of the data office at Delivery Hero Korea, said, "In the past three years, the proportion of people who want to spend the Lunar New Year holidays enjoying delicious and diverse foods and easily order through delivery apps has greatly increased," adding, "Delivery apps have now established themselves as representatives of food culture and are expected to settle more quickly and reliably as lifestyle apps."
