President Nam graduated from Ewha Womans University with a degree in Journalism and Broadcasting in 1978 and worked as an announcer for KBS. After earning a master's degree in Journalism and Broadcasting from Keimyung University and a doctorate in Education from Yeungnam University, he was appointed president of Daegu Health College in 2002. He has also served as a member of the Prime Minister's Office Government Performance Evaluation Committee, a member of the Presidential Committee on Local Autonomy Development, president of the Daegu branch of the Korean Red Cross, chairman of the Korea College Foundation Association, and senior vice president of the Korea Council for College Education.
