Songpa-gu's Population Increased by 10,000 in 2019... 'No.1 Among Seoul Autonomous Districts'
Total Population 675,000, Solidifying Position as Seoul's Largest Population... Large-Scale Development Projects Bring '700,000 Population City' Within Reach
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Last year, the population of Songpa-gu showed the largest increase among the 25 autonomous districts of Seoul.
Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) announced that according to the 2019 resident registration population statistics released by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the population as of the end of 2019 was 675,961, an increase of 9,326 compared to the previous year.
This is the highest figure among Seoul's autonomous districts, maintaining its position as the "number one city in population in Seoul."
In particular, while the population of 7 out of 10 of the 226 basic local governments nationwide is decreasing, Songpa-gu ranked 12th nationwide in terms of population growth. Among the top 15, only two districts in Seoul?Songpa-gu and Gangdong-gu (15th)?were included.
The average age in the district was 41.2 years, which is 1.4 years younger than the national average of 42.6 years. The youngest area was Wirye-dong at 34.6 years, which was analyzed to be greatly influenced by the development of the Wirye New Town.
Also, the working-age population (ages 15 to 64), which can gauge the qualitative change of the local population, increased by 3,590 from 502,846 in December 2018 to 506,436 in December 2019.
Despite resident relocations due to large-scale reconstruction projects such as Jinju, Miseong, and Clover in the second half of last year, the district analyzed that improvements in living conditions and the implementation of various policy projects during the 7th local government term were important factors in the population increase.
With the district government goal of "Number one in jobs, education, and quality of life," over the past year, Songpa-gu focused on projects such as the creation of the Songpa Waterfront Ollegil Trail, youth and sector-specific employment support programs, establishment of the Songpa Cultural Foundation, creation of public cultural spaces at Seokchon Lake, establishment of the Songpa Care Center and provision of night emergency care services, and development of Songpa SSEM.
As a result, in a public opinion survey conducted at the end of last year, 97.7% of residents responded that "living in Songpa is good," and 88.8% said "the quality of life in Songpa-gu is high," showing a high level of satisfaction with living conditions.
Looking ahead, with the completion of the Wirye New Town development, large-scale projects such as the Wirye Line tram and Wirye Sinsa Line, Jamsil International Exchange Complex, Songpa ICT Security Cluster, development of the former Seongdong Detention Center site, and development of the Bangi 2-dong youth complex facility are progressing smoothly, and the population is expected to continue growing into a city of 700,000.
Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, "Population is the most fundamental and important driving force for urban development," and added, "We will continue to prove Songpa's future development potential through the steadily increasing population and make it a city where everyone wants to live."
