Temporary Opening of 1,458km Forest Roads in Chungnam Region During Lunar New Year Holiday
[Asia Economy (Naepo) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Chungnam Province will temporarily open local forest roads during the Lunar New Year holiday period.
The province announced on the 21st that it will temporarily open 1,458 km of forest roads managed by local city and county governments until the 8th of next month.
Forest roads, a type of forest management infrastructure, are roads within forests established for afforestation, forest tending, wildfire prevention, and forest pest control, and are usually restricted to general vehicle traffic.
However, the province explained that around the Lunar New Year holiday, temporary access will be allowed on routes excluding forest protection zones and dangerous sections where general vehicle traffic is difficult. However, whether vehicles can enter each forest road must be confirmed in advance by contacting the forest department of each city or county.
Along with the temporary opening of forest roads, the province plans to strictly enforce laws against illegal forest damage such as unauthorized logging for grave management purposes, road construction, and unauthorized digging or harvesting of various forest products and rare plants.

Lee Sang-chun, head of the Forest Resources Division of the province, said, “Since the forest roads are opened for the convenience of those visiting graves and ancestral rites, we ask users to be careful to prevent illegal activities such as harvesting forest products, littering, unauthorized logging, and to avoid causing wildfire damage.”
