Prime Minister Abe: "The Japan-US Security Treaty is Immortal"
Prime Minister Abe Says This at the 60th Anniversary Ceremony of the US-Japan Security Treaty Signing
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stated on the 19th, marking the 60th anniversary of the revision of the US-Japan Security Treaty, "Now, the Japan-US Security Treaty is a more immortal pillar than ever before."
According to Kyodo News and others, Prime Minister Abe made these remarks at the 60th anniversary ceremony of the US-Japan Security Treaty signing held at the Igura Ministry of Foreign Affairs residence in the afternoon, emphasizing the importance of the treaty by calling it "an unshakable pillar that protects world peace and guarantees prosperity."
Prime Minister Abe also pledged to faithfully uphold the Japan-US alliance in space and cyberspace, adding, "For the next 60 years, 100 years, let us strengthen the alliance as a pillar supporting the world."
The ceremony was attended by Japanese officials including Deputy Prime Minister Taro Aso, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and Defense Minister Taro Kono, as well as American representatives such as Joseph Young, Charg? d'Affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Japan, and senior US military officers stationed in Japan.
The current US-Japan Security Treaty is the core document of the Japan-US alliance, signed 60 years ago on January 19, 1960, by then-Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, Prime Minister Abe’s maternal grandfather, and then-US President Dwight Eisenhower.
The United States and Japan revised the previous security treaty, which was concluded in line with the 1951 San Francisco Peace Treaty, in 1960 by adding the US obligation to defend Japan.
US President Donald Trump, in a statement released on the 18th (local time) commemorating the 60th anniversary of the US-Japan Security Treaty revision, evaluated, "The rock-solid alliance between two great nations over the past 60 years has been essential to the peace, security, and prosperity of the United States, Japan, the Indo-Pacific region, and the world."
