Choi Young-ho Preliminary Candidate: "Politics Must Prioritize Public Safety and Protection of Life"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Choi Young-ho, a preliminary candidate for the Democratic Party of Korea in Gwangju Metropolitan City Dongnam-gap district, recently came across news related to the Southern Gyeonggi Regional Trauma Center and stated on the 19th, "Politics must prioritize the safety and protection of the lives of the people," adding, "It is regrettable that our society still undervalues life under the logic of capital and that people like Professor Lee Guk-jong are being humiliated."
The Regional Trauma Center is a higher concept than an emergency medical center, equipped with facilities, equipment, and personnel to perform emergency surgery and treatment immediately upon hospital arrival for severe trauma patients beyond the scope of treatment in general emergency rooms, such as traffic accidents and falls. Under the Emergency Medical Service Act, the Ministry of Health and Welfare has designated 17 regional trauma centers nationwide, of which 14 are currently operational.
While preventable trauma mortality rates have decreased in all regions, and especially in the Gwangju, Jeolla, and Jeju regions, where the rate dropped from 40.7% in 2015 to 25.9% in 2017, a 14.8 percentage point improvement, it is fortunate to see such progress; however, approximately 1,600 severe trauma patients still do not receive timely treatment each year.

Preliminary candidate Choi Young-ho said, "As Professor Lee Guk-jong said, 'Patients should be treated according to the severity of their illness, not the amount of money they pay,' the right to receive treatment must be guaranteed," adding, "It is necessary to carefully examine whether the issues of the Regional Trauma Centers are merely management and operational problems or structural system problems, and if the 21st National Assembly convenes, it should seek improvement measures for the entire emergency medical system."
